I am looking for some type of full time living facility for my 23 year old step son. He is currently incarcerated as a result of what happens when he doesn’t take his medication for his schizophrenia. He is court ordered not to return to our home because he hurt his father,he was labeled a fire starter when he was 13 so I am having a hard time placing him . The prison will not release him until he has a place to go, I am at my wits end and do not know where to turn. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Lori
I don’t know a lot about the transition from jail/prison to the community, but some thoughts on places that may be able to help might include … NAMI ( http://nami.org ), if you are in Pennsylvania, you might also try PMHCA ( ) I don’t know if they could help directly, but they may know of some better resources …. NAMI is nationwide …. I know PMHCA is huge on advocacy for folks in PA. I wish I had more to offer, but I’m at kind of a loss in terms of info.
Thank you Jenn , I am following those leads now

you’re welcome Lori, I wish you luck on this I’m sure it can’t be an easy task. If you happen to find any good resources, could you email them to me at … webtypoATverizon.net swap the AT for @ so I can add the resources here since it is an issue I’ve heard of before, but unfortunately don’t know much about. I think this could possibly explain in part something I read about it being more likely that someone in prison who has a mental health diagnosis will often end up serving not just the entire sentence, but often have extra time added to that sentence.
nsightful thoughts here. Are you certain this is the best way to look at it though? My experience is that we should pretty much live and let live because what one person thinks just — another person simply doesn’t. People are going to do what they want to do. In the end, they always do. The most we can yearn for is to highlight a few things here and there that hopefully, allows them to make just a little better informed decision. Otherwise, great post. You’re definitely making me think! –Barry
I am looking for information about Allentown State Hospital. I had a great aunt who was there in the late 1930′s and who I believe died there in the early to mid 1950′s. I’m doing research for a book I want to write that tells her story (at this point don’t know if it will be non-fiction or if I’ll have to make it a novel due to inability to gather enough factual history. I don’t know if it is possible for me to access records, but if anyone out there knows about this, I’d appreciate hearing from them!
Thanks.
http://kirkbridebuildings.com has a section in their forum discussing the topic of getting records, you might try there as well.
