State Sen. Jim Ferlo and members of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee will convene a public hearing on the effects of closing Mayview State Hospital in South Fayette. The hearing takes place Thursday at 10 a.m. in Pittsburgh City Council chambers at the City-County Building on Grant Street.

Mayview is more than 100 years old and the last state hospital in the Allegheny County treating the mentally ill. A closing would affect 500 staff and 200 patients. The state wants to send patients to group or supervised living homes. The facility is slated to shutter by the end of 2008.

Mayview serves five counties, Allegheny, Beaver, Greene, Lawrence and Washington.
