Personal Research Project

I decided that for this year, I want to learn as much as I can about the history of the mental health system, going back as far as possible in time.  My thought on doing this, is that by learning where the mental health system has been, I’ll be able to better understand where it is right now and maybe even where it’s heading in the future, not to mention I will hopefully be able to spot indicators that history might be repeating itself should it begin to do so.

So, why am I writing about my project here?  Well, it simple actually 🙂  I would like to see if anyone has any suggestions on any resources that might help me with this endeavor?  Resources can be books, music, movies, internet resources, and can include anything from info about people who have had an impact on changing the mental health system, “treatments” used over the years (i.e. ECT, EMDR, Hydrotherapy, Insulin Shock … etc.).  Information about the history of facilities such as State Hospitals going back to the days when they were referred to as asylums and beyond.  If you know of info about political or religious views that had an impact on how people with mental illnesses have been treated, or well, in a nutshell, anything under the sun that pertains to the history of the mental health system or treatment of mental health consumers, please email me at …. pamhi@verizon.net
