This May 23, 2014 NPR article offers an overview of some of the findings and theories researchers are finding when they try to understand why people with mental illnesses die earlier than people without mental illnesses.  The researchers seem to show there is still a lot that is not understood, but they feel that by better addressing stigma, educating the public, and addressing how health care system approaches treating people with mental illnesses could be a practical starting point.
