“Keeping people out of hospitals makes system healthier”

This November 5, 2014 The Morning Call article found on the InsuranceNews.net website talks about efforts being made with help from a grant to try to decrease the excessive use of the emergency department by a small percentage of patients.  The term used to describe this population according to the article is “Super-utilizer” because of how often they use services.  The goal of the program is to find ways to help this population prevent trips to the hospital by looking at things like social supports, housing and other things not traditionally looked at by the medical community when treating a patient. in short the focus is on prevention.

“Delaware County pilot program puts mental health decisions in patients hands”

This November 7, 2014 NewsWorks article talks about a pilot program in Delaware County, PA that is working with people with mental illnesses using self-directed care that offers them more choices about the services they receive.  The person can say this service isn’t working for me, but I think this over here might be a better fit to meet my needs, and the money from the program is shifted to allow for the change in service.

This November 5, 2014 Open Letter to Governor Wolf from Antoinette Kraus, Director of the Pennsylvania Health Access Network, talks about the need to ditch Corbett’s Medicaid plan and go with a traditional Medicaid expansion to ensure that Pennsylvanians who are eligible for Medicaid either get into the program or are able to keep their coverage if they are already in the program.
