This March 9, 2015 NPR Shots article talks about the how 51% of suicides in rural area involve guns.  The article doesn’t suggest taking guns away, but suggests that people who own them take time to secure their guns in a safe way that will limit access to them by people who could be at risk.  It was felt that safely securing firearms and limiting access to them could reduce suicide rates in rural areas by between 30% and 50% of the current rural suicide rate.

This September 4, 2014 Health Day article found on the Philly.com website talks about an Australian study that found that people who were treated for severe burns ranging from 1 to 80 percent of their body as children were at greater risk of developing depression or becoming suicidal later on.  The study also found that the person who had been burnt typically didn’t attribute their depression or suicidal thoughts to the burns. They generally pointed  to an unrelated issue that occurred later in life.

“Study: Common HIV Drug May Boost Suicide Risk”

This June 30, 2014 Health Day article found on the Philly.com website talks about a recent study that seems to confirm a link between a medication used to treat HIV and an increased risk of suicide for the duration of treatment with the medication.  The article encourages medical professionals to screen patients taking it for signs of suicide or depression.
