“Single Gene Mutation May Predispose to ADHD”

This June 11, 2014 post on the Medical Research and News: MedicalResearch.com blog talks about research being done that is showing that a single gene mutation could be a huge factor in why some people have ADHD and others don’t.  there is speculation that the same gene effecting ADHD may be tied to Schizophrenia also, but more research is needed to better understand this link and what can be done to correct it.

“Anderson Cooper Goes Through A Harrowing Mental Illness Experiment”

This June 10, 2014 article on the Huffington Post: Media website talks about a segment of Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN that aired on June 9, 2014, where Anderson went through an experiment to see what it can be like for someone who hears voices.  Dr. Pat Deegan designed the experiment to allow others to have a taste of what it is like for those who like Pat are diagnosed with Schizophrenia and need to deal with hearing voices day in and day out.

that dementia is more common among people with schizophrenia then it is in those without a mental illness.  There is a question being raised about whether the higher rate of dementia is due to symptoms of schizophrenia being misinterpreted as being symptoms of dementia.  They are indicating that more research is needed to better understand this issue though.

This May 23, 2014 NPR article offers an overview of some of the findings and theories researchers are finding when they try to understand why people with mental illnesses die earlier than people without mental illnesses.  The researchers seem to show there is still a lot that is not understood, but they feel that by better addressing stigma, educating the public, and addressing how health care system approaches treating people with mental illnesses could be a practical starting point.
