“Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later For Teens’ Health”

This August 25, 2014 NPR: Shots article talks about concerns being raised that start times for middle and high school should be at 8:30 or later to help teens get adequate sleep.  Pediatricians point out that teens need between 8-1/2 and 9 hours of sleep, and that the majority of teens are not able to fall asleep before 11pm, not so much because of distractions in their bedroom, but because that’s how teens are wired.

“Just 1 in 4 U.S. Teens Gets Enough Exercise”

This January 8, 2014 HealthDay article on the Philly.com website talks about research that indicates most teens are getting less than 1 hour of physical activity per day.  The research also finds that teens who are obese tend to be less likely to be physically active then teens of a healthy weight.  This observation has researchers wondering if obesity causes decreased activity or if decreased activity causes obesity (made me think of which came first? the chicken? or the egg?)

This article dated January 18, 2012 was found on the NewsWorks website, and while it isn’t specific to Pennsylvania, it is something that could have an impact here.  The article discusses toxic stress and its effect on child development, as well as indicating that pediatricians are concerned and may be able to help screen for the effects of toxic stress on children.
