Course Link

This course is being offered free-of-charge on Coursera.org.  The instructor for the course is from Johns Hopkins.

I have not taken this particular course, but it is one I just signed up for and thought I would share a link to it here in case anyone is interested in learned how to respond when they meet someone experiencing a mental health crisis.  I have taken other courses through Coursera, and found them to be worth the time it took to take part.

This Psychological First aid course is a 6 week course requiring 1 – 3 hours of time per week

Dates: May 18, 2015 through June 27, 2015

If you complete the course with a grade of 70% or higher you will receive a certificate of completion.

The course is for people wanting to help someone else who is in crisis and is not appropriate if you are someone seeking help due to crisis.

This March 22, 2013 article on The Sunday Dispatch website talks about training received by first responders in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties. The training certified them as Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) and involved learning how to redirect folks who are in a mental health crisis to get help as opposed to arresting them and putting them in jail.  The training involved Mental health professionals, family members, friends, and even Consumers each offering a unique perspective on what may be helpful to someone in a mental health crisis.
