Upcoming Training: “Psychological First Aid”

Course Link

This course is being offered free-of-charge on Coursera.org.  The instructor for the course is from Johns Hopkins.

I have not taken this particular course, but it is one I just signed up for and thought I would share a link to it here in case anyone is interested in learned how to respond when they meet someone experiencing a mental health crisis.  I have taken other courses through Coursera, and found them to be worth the time it took to take part.

This Psychological First aid course is a 6 week course requiring 1 – 3 hours of time per week

Dates: May 18, 2015 through June 27, 2015

If you complete the course with a grade of 70% or higher you will receive a certificate of completion.

The course is for people wanting to help someone else who is in crisis and is not appropriate if you are someone seeking help due to crisis.

This August 19, 2014 GantDaily.com article talks about a solution San Antonio Texas has come up with to help police better work with people who are in a mental health crisis.  The process they have developed is said to be a model for the entire country, and decreases the amount of time police officers need to spend getting someone in a mental health crisis help, but also offers the police a solution that offers the person treatment as opposed to being sent to jail and appears to be more cost effective than the traditional options of using the Emergency room or jail.
