This August 17, 2015 WESA Pittsburgh NPR segment talks about studies being done to see if there is a way to utilize video game technology to help with treating mental health issues such as ADHD or Depression.  The idea of using games to treat mental health disorders could be a reality … it just seems that it may take some time for policies and approval rates to catch up to the technology.

“Wolf signs bill to require mental health training for police officers”

This July 11, 2015 The Sentinel article talks about a bill with vague training requirements for police officers to receive training in how to identify people who have a mental illness, intellectual disability, or Autism but really doesn’t go into specifics about the depth or extent of the training required just that police offers are now required to have this training.  It is hoped that officers will be trained to work with mental health professionals as part of this training and their work in the field.

This June 22, 2015 article on the NewsWorks website talks about the need to commemorate the people who suffered at Philadelphia State Hospital or “Byberry” as it is often called.  The article also points out that people with mental health issues generally do better when they can receive services in the community instead of being placed in a large institution.  The article also indicates that by nature, large institutions sacrifice the humanity of the people placed there in exchange for efficiency of the work.
