Vitamin D and Mental Illness

I just read a paper written about the possible connection between mental illness and vitamin D deficiency.   I was diagnosed with a Vitamin D deficiency, and noticed some positive changes in my mood and also in my pain level after starting treatment for it.  I deal with depression, anxiety, and arthritis in my lower spine, so there are a lot of times my mood isn’t exactly the best in the world.  With my pain level from my arthritis having decreased, I find that depression isn’t running my life as much as it had been.  I still take psych meds, but I also take vitamin D3 supliments in addition to them.

The test to see what your Vitamin D level is like, is a simple blood test ordered by your doctor.  From what I’ve been told by my own doctor, Vitamin D deficiency is pretty common in this part of the country so it might be something worth having checked.

Of course the best way to get Vitamin D is from natural sunlight, but sometimes a suppliment is needed if you live in an area where there is a lack of sunshine.

Always check with your doctor before taking anything like medications or supplements since even vitamins can have side effects and can interact with other things you may be on … some vitamins can even become toxic if taken in too high of a dose or in cases where you don’t need to take it because you don’t have a deficiency.  So, I am not telling my readers to run out and buy vitamin D, I am suggesting that they consider talking to their doctor about the possibility of a deficiency.
