This February 25, 2016 article on the News works website talks about the immense struggle that rural areas face when trying to meet the demand for mental health services, particularly access to Psychiatrists, in Pennsylvania.  The article estimates that there are about 10 Psychiatrists for every 100,000 people in Pennsylvania and points out that many of the existing Psychiatrists seem to cluster around the larger cities leaving folks in rural areas where the need tends to be greater with fewer

“For Young People In Rural Areas, Suicide Poses A Growing Threat”

This March 9, 2015 NPR Shots article talks about the how 51% of suicides in rural area involve guns.  The article doesn’t suggest taking guns away, but suggests that people who own them take time to secure their guns in a safe way that will limit access to them by people who could be at risk.  It was felt that safely securing firearms and limiting access to them could reduce suicide rates in rural areas by between 30% and 50% of the current rural suicide rate.
