This January 7, 2015 Think Progress article talks about changes being made to the treatment of inmates with mental health issues that are happening because of a settlment in a federal lawsuit brought by the Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania (DRNPA)  against the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC).

This August 2, 2014 TribLive|USWorld article talks about dramatic changes that will be made system wide to the California correctional system on how people with mental illnesses who are in jails or prison are treated during the time they are incarcerated.  Some changes include a ban on the use of pepper spray in mental health detention areas of prisons without special authorization.  Other changes include allowing guards to enter the cell of a person with a mental illness, long enough to administer medication to them, but then leaving the cell without forcibly removing the person from their cell in the process

if at all possible.

“Report criticizes treatment of mentally ill Pa. prisoners”

This February 24, 2014 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article talks about a recent report on the use of solitary confinement for mentally ill prisoners in Pennsylvania.  The rate of mentally ill prisoners being sent to solitary is higher than the rate of non-mentally ill prisoners being sent to solitary there is also evidence of an increased rate of suicide attempts among prisoners in solitary confinement.

This May 31, 2013 article found on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette website talks about a Federal investigation into the treatment of mentally ill inmates at Cresson prison, but based on the article the investigation will include a statewide investigation.

This March 15, 2013 article on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette website talks about the treatment of mentally ill inmates in prisons.  The article not only explains what is happening, but also points out that there is knowledge about how to correct the problem, but it isn’t being implemented enough to be all that useful in solving the problem.
